Transfer Options from Salvador to Barra Grande and Maraú
Marau Travel offers three different ways to get from Salvador and Salvador Airport to Barra Grande and the Maraú Peninsula. For most travelers, we recommend the route via Itaparica, which includes a boat crossing from Mercado Modelo in Salvador to Mar Grande on Itaparica Island. Of the three transfer options, this is the fastest and most economical.
| Options | Time | Cost | |
| 1 | Pick-up in Itaparica | Fastest | Lowest |
| 2 | Pick-up at Airport or Hotel – via Itaparica | Medium | Medium |
| 3 | Pick-up at Airport or Hotel – via mainland | Slowest | Highest |
Option 1 – Recommended
Transfer from Itaparica to Barra Grande (via Camamu)
This option is more affordable and offers greater flexibility. Travelers can take an Uber or taxi from Salvador Airport or their hotel to one of Salvador’s passenger ferry terminals (either the Ferry Terminal or the Mercado Modelo Boat Terminal).
Step 1 – Go to the Ferry or Speedboat Terminal

Travelers make their own way from Salvador (airport or hotel) to one of the maritime terminals, where they board either a passenger speedboat or the ferry to Itaparica Island.
Step 2 – Crossing the Todos os Santos Bay
There are two ways to cross from Salvador to Itaparica:
Maritime Terminal Mercado Modelo – Boats “Lanchas” to Mar Grande (Recommended)
Most travelers prefer the smaller boats departing from the Mercado Modelo Terminal to Mar Grande, Itaparica. They are faster and operate more frequently, typically every 30 minutes starting at 6:00 AM.
This option is especially convenient for visitors staying in Pelourinho, as the Elevador Lacerda drops passengers almost directly in front of the terminal.

São Joaquim Ferry Terminal
The ferry departs from São Joaquim Terminal and transports both vehicles and passengers to Bom Despacho, Itaparica. Ferries typically depart hourly, with the crossing taking approximately one hour.
The main advantage of the ferry is reliability, as it continues operating during poor weather conditions or when tides are too low for speedboat service.

Step 3 – Private Transfer from Itaparica to Camamu
Upon arrival in either Mar Grande (Vera Cruz) or Bom Despacho, your driver will be waiting with a sign and will assist with luggage before beginning the transfer to Camamu, where hourly speedboats depart for Barra Grande.
Step 4 – Speedboat Crossing Camamu to Barra Grande
Your driver will drop you off at the Camamu pier, where speedboats depart every hour on the hour for Barra Grande and Marau. He will assist with your luggage and help you get your ticket for the speedboat crossing.
Optionally, Marau Travel can reserve your Camamu–Barra Grande speedboat tickets for R$60 per person (ages 5 and above), helping you avoid unnecessary waiting times. Tickets can be added when booking your transfer for the same price available at the pier.

Travelers heading to Taipu de Fora may also use the local shared jeeps, known as “jardineiras,” which connect Barra Grande with the beaches and villages along the peninsula.
The departure point is located directly in front of the pier, next to the taxi stand.
